Virtually in the open sea, lies the wonderful island of Vis. Greeks, as the first settlers, established a colony here called Issa. That was the first Greek colony in Dalmatia. Vis town is surrounded by mountains with a lot of terraces indicating there were many vineyards on the slopes, but now areas are not cultivated and the macchia is winning back the landscape. Palm trees from Vis nursery adorn many Croatian coastal towns. Because of the position of the island, Tito and the Yugoslav army considered it as a very important strategic place. It became closed to tourists and opened again for foreigners in 1989. Because of this isolation, the island is still untouched. Younger than Vis, on the west side, we can find Komiža, a fisherman’s towm. For centuries, people here were mostly dealing with fishing using
